What's in the Cards for the week of July 25, 2017

Looking for some mystical yet practical guidance to help you hit the ground running each week? I’m here with my Tarot cards to give you the insight and illumination that you need to make the most of the energy of the week.

Take a moment, take a breath, and look at the image below. Choose the card that is most calling to you, 1, 2 or 3… this is your personal message from the universe to inspire and empower you in the days ahead.
Picture
Your message revealed:
LOVE is in the air! Love yourself, let someone else love you. Take time to appreciate the world you have created.

Card #1: Queen of Cups
An emotional day...be aware of your moods and flow with them. Don’t be afraid to dive deep. Listen to your intuition and act from the heart. There is someone around you who could use a kind word and a shoulder to cry on, they may come to you for comfort and support rather than answers or solutions. You can honor and experience your feelings today without drowning in them or getting lost in the feelings of others.

Card #2: The Lovers
Recognize and value the power of love in your life, whether it’s romantic love, deep friendship, or the love you feel for your own dear self. Bodes well if you are in a relationship, it feels deep and mature. Also a good sign if you are currently seeking love, the real thing is out there. On a different note, if you need to make a choice or a decision today, be sure to stick to your own ethics and moral high ground, even if someone is urging you to take the low or easier road.

Card #3: Nine of Pentacles
You have worked hard and achieved much, take some time to enjoy the world you have created for yourself. Do something today that makes you feel relaxed and grounded. Today is all about ease and beauty. Spend some time appreciating your home and environment, this is not a day for rushing around.

I wish you a week of love that brings a feeling of protection and also freedom.

5 Things You Should Know About Anxiety

1. You are not alone

Almost everyone experiences anxiety at some points in there life, be it worrying about their children, fear of public speaking or flying or some other form of generalized anxiety.
Almost everyone who comes into my offices suffers from some form of anxiety. To care about other people is to have anxiety. However, if your anxiety is starting to impede the way you live your life, it may be time to start thinking about what you can do about it.

2. Your anxiety has some benefits

Know that your anxiety is there for a reason. It could be that there is a real danger. Perhaps your anxiety is covering some other emotion that you are not ready to deal with yet. It could be keeping you off the streets and making sure you don't get hurt. Anxiety is adaptive when dangers are real and serious. We would never want to get rid of our anxiety completely.

Anxious people are reliable, they are planners and thinkers (which is what gets in their way sometimes). They will often have a plan and have thought of all the things that could go wrong and accounted for them. Anxious people are often very sensitive. They are super aware of everything going on, smells, sounds, people and possibilities.

3. Diet and exercise affect your anxiety

We all know there are many benefits to eating well and exercising but did you know that it could improve your anxiety?
Exercise can be a great way to release pent up emotions and physical tension while also releasing feelings of fear and worry. Additionally, maintaining a regular exercise routine has been associated with improved mood, enhanced self-esteem, and increased energy levels.

Caffeine is one of the most common dietary triggers that can impact people with anxiety. Even people that don't normally feel anxious will start exhibiting anxious behaviours after a few cups of coffee! Other foods that may trigger anxiety include processed foods and foods high in sugar and white flour.

4. Meditation can help with anxiety
(there are a lot of apps available for this)

It has been proven that mindfulness meditation can change the structure and function of the brain to make it work better. There are lots of apps available to help you with meditation.

A few of my favourites are:
Headspace - an app that teaches you and guides you through 10 minute mindfulness meditations. The first 3 weeks are free and after that you pay a monthly fee and have unlimited access meditations that focus on different areas of your life you would like to improve

Insight timer - this app is free. You can use it just as a timer for your own meditation and there are also tons of guided meditations available.

Gaia - this program offers yoga practices, meditations and educational videos.

5. Help is available.

The good thing about anxiety being so prevalent is that a lot of research is being done on it and there is a lot of help available. You don't need to suffer alone. The things listed above are some that can try on your own but there are lots of other resources in the city, and of course you can always enlist the help of a qualified therapist.

Upcoming Workshop...

If you are interested in learning more about your anxiety and how to deal with it consider attending my workshop on anxiety which is being held on July 27th at the Inner Arts Collective.

The workshop will incorporate mindfulness exercise, movement and creativity to help you get out of your thinking mind and give you some tools to use in your every day life. There will also be reflection and discussion to help you better understand your anxiety.

What's in the Cards for the week of July 18, 2017

Looking for some mystical yet practical guidance to help you hit the ground running each week? I’m here with my Tarot cards to give you the insight and illumination that you need to make the most of the energy of the week.

Take a moment, take a breath, and look at the image below. Choose the card that is most calling to you, 1, 2 or 3… this is your personal message from the universe to inspire and empower you in the days ahead.

Picture
Your message revealed:
Celebrate, dance like there’s no tomorrow, get caught up in the moment…but stay grounded enough to know when to go home from the party.

Card #1: Ace of Pentacles
Use your common sense today, focus on achieving one, small, tangible goal. Take that first step towards manifesting the security, health and contentment that you desire. An unexpected financial windfall may come your way.

Card #2: Three of Cups

Spend some time with your friends, have fun, blow off some steam. If you need help or support, your friends will give it to you. If you have a friend who needs some help, make sure that you're there for them as well. In a work situation, celebrate a successful project or goal reached together. Be open to creative inspiration.

Card #3: Four of Cups
The blahs. An opportunity is being offered to you, but you can't or won't see it. Feeling tired of the same old same old. Might be a good day to spend some time on your own, think about why you are feeling dissatisfied or bored with your situation and formulate a strategy to get out of that rut. After some “me” time, re-examine that opportunity, may be more promising than you initially thought. Or, may be a good time to cut back on a pleasure that has grown stale.

I wish you a week of well-being, celebration and unexpected gifts.

An Awakening Story by Deborah Brodey

19 years ago was a turning point in my life. I had completed my MA in adult education and had worked several years as a frontline crisis counselor. I was a change maker and was getting burned out fast. I was in a relationship which caused me great internal conflict and I wanted to make changes on many levels but was unsure of my direction. As well, I was having anxiety attacks. Finally, I made a decision to go to Vancouver for a break and a change of scenery. Before I left, I spoke with the man I was with about my anxiety. I was quite shaken and he gave me tobacco wrapped in a red cloth and told me to offer it in a natural place (Tobacco is one of the sacred medicines in many First Nation traditions across North America). He told me I would know the moment. So with tobacco in my pocket I left for Vancouver hoping that I would know the moment.

After three days of walking on the beach by the mountains, being with good friends and writing down my thoughts and feelings, I began to come back to myself and all of the anxiety subsided. On the third day, my walk along kitsalano beach was met by the most beautiful sight of a Bald Eagle perched on top of the totem pole outside the Marina museum. I was overcome by emotion and I felt an intense gratitude. I knew this was the moment. I reached for the red bundle in my pocket, which I opened and offered to the earth. I sat and was with the Eagle for a long time. It seemed that nobody even noticed that she was there. I didn’t understand what the significance was of this experience but I knew it was sacred, healing and important. I also felt that somehow life had sent me a message. I had been exposed to Native spiritual teachings through my work at a Native Women’s organization in Toronto and was aware that the Eagle was a powerful symbol as a messenger of the Great Spirit. What that meant for me was not clear except that I felt an urgency to discover more about the Eagle and its message. So I began my search about Eagles, beginning with searching in the new age bookstore for any clues.

Practice Feature: Mindful Yoga

If you are someone who has ever taken or even thought about taking a yoga class, you have undoubtedly been faced with a multitude of options. First you have your standard Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Bikram, Hot Yoga, Yin, Restorative, and Kundalini yoga classes. From there the titles get more creative as each studio and teacher put their own flare into their classes; combining, fusing, and supplementing yoga styles sometimes with other movement or spiritual traditions. A quick look at some of the top studios in Toronto gives us classes such as Functional Flow, Kundalini Vinyasa Fusion, Core Power Flow, Chakra Flow, Hatha HypnoZen, Yin Yang, Slow Flow Vinyasa, Moon Yoga, Yoga Conditioning, Detox Flow, Yoga Sculpt, Goddess Flow, Bliss Yoga, and Yogalates. Phew!!

And now I am writing to you about Mindful Yoga. What in the heck is Mindful Yoga, and are all these styles really that different? Are they even still yoga? As with many questions, the short answer is both yes and no. It’s true, the practice of yoga has evolved significantly here in the West and continues to do so, so much so that it is sometimes difficult to say that what we are currently seeing can still be referred to as yoga in the traditional sense. The same can be said for the practice of Mindfulness. Like Yoga, Mindfulness has gained much popularity in the West over the last decade or so since entering the mainstream. In addition to Mindfulness Meditation, we can now also find Mindful Eating, Mindful Movement, Mindful Conversation, Mindfulness Stress Reduction Programs, Mindfulness Based Therapy, Mindfulness Based Recovery Programs, and yes Mindful Yoga. It seems that Mindfulness, too, has evolved significantly since its traditional roots in Buddhist Spiritual Practice.

What's in the Cards for the week of July 4, 2017

Looking for some mystical yet practical guidance to help you hit the ground running each week? I’m here with my Tarot cards to give you the insight and illumination that you need to make the most of the energy of the week.

Take a moment, take a breath, and look at the image below. Choose the card that is most calling to you, 1, 2 or 3… this is your personal message from the universe to inspire and empower you in the days ahead.

Picture
Your message revealed:

This week starts on an introspective note, with an exploration into who we really are and what we want to do with this life…and ends with a much desired flash of inspiration!

Card #1: Ten of Pentacles
Think long term today. Remember what you are working towards, keep that end goal in mind, and it will help to keep you going when challenges arise. If you’re just at the beginning of your journey, be patient and know that your efforts are building towards future financial security and comfort for yourself and those you love. You are building your legacy.

Card #2: The Hermit
It’s natural to feel introspective at pivotal times…today, you may feel the urge to withdraw, spend some time on your own, and reflect. If you are struggling to find the answer to an issue that’s been on your mind, look for it within. You may find yourself in the role of mentor or teacher today; share your own wisdom and experience to help others find their answers as well.

Card #3: Ace of Wands
Inspiration is coming today! If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it! Look for ways to express your creativity, your passion. Anything started today has great potential for growth if you continue to nurture it. Grab on to what you want and never let go.
